Sponge cities for tackling extreme weather and city growth

China aims to build “sponge cities” in 30 pilot cities to deal with extreme weather and growing urban population. Sponge cities would be designed as giant sponges “to trap and hold more water to deal with problems from flooding and drought to extreme heat and pollution”. At least 80% of Chinese cities are intended to become sponge cities by 2030.
